Astra's Nova Wings guide

Steer squadron leader Astra's fighter through enemy formations and a boss's bullet patterns in this vertical shooter. Firing is automatic and only a small dot at the centre of the fighter can be hit, so threading between bullets is the heart of the game. Each stage sends 7 to 13 set formations before the boss appears, and bringing the boss down completes the mission.

How to play

  1. Pick a stage and drag on the screen to take off. No enemies appear before your first input, so move when you are ready.
  2. Press and drag anywhere and the fighter moves by the same amount as your finger. It never jumps under your finger, so it stays visible, and the arrow keys or a gamepad stick also fly it.
  3. Firing is automatic. Touching an enemy bullet or enemy craft costs a heart, and you cannot be hit again while you blink afterwards.
  4. Shooting down a hexagonal elite drops an item. Shot power (P) comes first until it reaches level 3, after which shields (S) and bombs (B) drop.
  5. Press the bomb button, Space or B to wipe every enemy bullet off the screen. You start with one bomb and can hold up to three.
  6. After the formations the boss arrives. Defeat it and your remaining hearts set the stars (three hearts for three stars), and clearing stage 4 opens the daily flight.

Strategy tips

  • A hit costs a heart and one level of shot power. With a shield up, only the shield breaks and your hearts and power stay intact, so a shield is worth more the stronger your guns are.
  • A bomb pays 5 points for every enemy bullet it clears and gives a brief moment of invulnerability. Use it when the screen is thick with bullets to gain both points and safety.
  • The boss alternates between a fan, a ring with a single gap and an aimed three-way spread. Slide to the gap in the ring, and sidestep widely to let the aimed shots pass.
  • Once the boss falls below half health it fires its patterns more often. Keep one bomb in reserve for that final stretch.
  • Diving formations steer toward where you were when they appeared. Step aside as soon as you see them, then shoot once they have passed.

Common questions

How many points does beating the boss give?

The boss is worth 3,000 points plus 500 for each heart you still have. Formation enemies are worth 100 to 400 depending on type, with elites worth the most.

How far can the fighter move?

You can reach both side edges, but upward you can only climb to about the lower two thirds of the screen. You cannot park right in front of the boss.

How long does a shield last?

A shield has no time limit and stays until it absorbs one hit. Right after it blocks, you also get a short invulnerability window so you are not hit twice in a row.
