Roa's FreeCell guide

Classic FreeCell solitaire hosted by card-café owner Roa. All 52 cards start face up across eight columns, so careful planning rather than luck decides each game, and the key skill is spending the four free cells at the top left wisely. Thirty deals are ordered from roomy openings to tight ones, a new Daily deal arrives every day, and every deal has been checked in advance to be solvable.

How to play

  1. Pick Deal 1. Finishing a deal unlocks the next, and the Daily deal can be picked at any time. Any aces (and the twos that follow them) available at the start go to the foundations on their own.
  2. The bottom card of a column can go onto another column's bottom card if it is the opposite colour and one rank lower. Any card can go into an empty column.
  3. Each of the four free cells at the top left holds one card, and the foundations at the top right build each suit from ace to king.
  4. Tapping a card sends it to the best spot in this order: foundation, a matching column, an empty column, then a free cell. Drag it instead when you want a different spot.
  5. Cards no longer needed in the columns go to the foundations on their own. The deal is complete once all 52 cards are home.
  6. Keyboard: arrow keys choose, Enter moves straight away, and Space picks a card up so you can choose its destination; Z undoes, H hints, Esc cancels a selection. Gamepad: A moves, B picks up or cancels, X undoes, Y hints.

Strategy tips

  • The number of cards you can move at once is (free cells + 1) × 2 to the power of empty columns. Four free cells plus one empty column lets you move 10 cards, so one empty column is worth more than several free cells.
  • Treat the free cells as a last resort. Once they are all full you cannot move long runs and the game locks up quickly.
  • Dig out the columns where aces and twos are buried. Once low cards go up, the cards stacked on them can follow home automatically.
  • Apart from aces and twos, cards only go home automatically once both opposite-colour suits have reached the rank just below them. You can still drag a card to its foundation yourself when you need to.
  • A hint highlights the next move but never plays it for you. If no hint can be found, none is used up, so when you are stuck undo a few moves and ask again.

Common questions

How do I earn stars?

Finish without any hints or undos for three stars, with at most one hint and five undos for two stars, and any other finish earns one star.

How is the score calculated?

A finished deal starts at 2,000 points, minus 5 per move, 1 per second, 20 per undo and 150 per hint. However long it takes, the score never drops below 600.

How many times can I undo?

There is no limit on presses, and you can step back through your most recent 300 moves. Cards that went home automatically return together with the move that sent them.

Can every deal really be won?

Yes. The 30 deals and the Daily deal only use numbered deals known to be solvable, and the unsolvable number is skipped. The deal number is also shown in the shared result text.
