Lotus Tails guide

Steer Livia's ribbon around a lotus pond, eat glowing energy to grow, and race rival ribbons for 90 seconds. There are eight ponds, each with its own number of rivals (3 to 6), lily-pad and rock obstacles, and a goal: a finishing rank, a mass, an energy score or a number of rivals trapped. You play with three hearts, and if the goal is met when the match ends you earn one star per heart left.

How to play

  1. On the start screen, pick an unlocked pond, check its goal and rival count, then start a solo match. Meeting a pond's goal unlocks the next one.
  2. On touch, the ribbon's head turns toward where you drag; with a mouse it follows the cursor. Keyboard players steer with WASD or the arrow keys, and gamepads with the left stick.
  3. Touch energy orbs with your head to raise your energy score and mass. Rank is decided by mass, so the heavier you are than the rivals, the higher you place.
  4. The match runs through Lotus start until about 20 seconds, Relay hunt until about 65 seconds, then Final bloom. Flower signal relays appear nearby when stages 2 and 3 begin, so claim them before the rivals do.
  5. If your head hits a rival's body you lose a heart, drop to half mass (at least 42), and restart in open water away from the rivals with a short shield. The match ends when your hearts run out or 90 seconds pass.
  6. Hold the Boost button, Space, Shift, the left mouse button or gamepad A to burn mass for double speed. P, Esc or the gamepad Start button pauses.

Strategy tips

  • Skim close past a rival's body without touching it to build FLOW one step at a time and earn bonus points. FLOW raises speed and turning up to level 9, but it fades if you do not chain another near miss or relay within two to three seconds.
  • When a rival's head runs into your body, that rival is knocked out and you score a K.O. On ponds that ask you to trap rivals, cut across a rival's path with your body.
  • In a head-on collision you only win if your mass is at least 8% larger. Close in size, both ribbons break and you lose a heart, so only go head to head when you are clearly bigger.
  • Boosting burns mass and drops small orbs from your tail. Mass and rank goals are judged at the final whistle, so keep boosts short, for grabbing a relay or escaping danger.
  • You cannot collide during the 3.2-second shield at the start or the 2.2-second shield after a respawn. Three stars mean losing no hearts, so use those shields to open distance and pick a safe line.

Common questions

What is the goal of each pond?

Dawn pond: top 3. Lily lane: mass 110. Reed maze: top 2. Relay sprint: 1,500 energy. Hunting pond: trap 2 rivals. Rock gorge: top 2. Rain pond: mass 170. Lotus crown: first place. All are judged on your numbers when the match ends.

How are stars awarded?

You clear a pond if its goal is met at the end and you still have a heart. One heart left gives one star, two give two and all three give three, and the best result per pond is saved.

What happens if I lose every heart?

The match ends immediately and does not count as a clear, even if you had passed the goal number. The result screen still shows your energy, rank, K.O. count and the time left.

Where are my records kept?

Your best energy score, stars per pond and sound and vibration settings are saved on this device. If storage is unavailable, records are kept in memory for the visit and you can still play.
