Samira's Tower of Hanoi guide

Help tower artisan Samira move every disc onto the right-most peg in this Tower of Hanoi puzzle. Only two rules apply: you move one top disc at a time, and a larger disc may never rest on a smaller one. From a three-disc tower to eight discs on four pegs, twelve stages build on those rules, and each stage's par is the exact minimum found by checking every possible arrangement, so matching it precisely is the best possible result.

How to play

  1. Tap a peg with discs to lift its top disc, then tap another peg to drop it there. The disc you are holding floats above the pegs.
  2. On a keyboard, choose a peg with ← and →, lift and drop with Enter, and use Z to undo, H for a hint and R to restart. On a gamepad, choose with the D-pad, select with A, undo with B, hint with Y and pause with Start.
  3. The stage is complete when every disc is stacked in order on the right-most peg. Compare your move count with the par shown at the top as you go.
  4. Stages 1 to 4 use three pegs with three to six discs. From stage 5, four-peg towers and scattered towers, where discs start spread across the pegs, join the mix. The final stage 12 has eight discs on four pegs.
  5. Completing a stage unlocks the next one, and the result screen shows your moves, score and stars.

Strategy tips

  • Undo takes one move off your count. A mistake you undo leaves no trace in your result, so use it freely even while chasing par.
  • A three-peg tower that starts as a single stack of n discs needs at least 2ⁿ−1 moves. With an odd number of discs, move the smallest disc to the right-most peg first; with an even number, to the middle peg. After that, alternate between moving the smallest disc around the pegs in the same cycle and making the only legal move that does not involve it.
  • On four-peg stages that start as a single stack, first park several top discs on one other peg, then move the three largest discs using only the remaining three pegs, and finally restack the parked discs on top. Every four-peg tower of five to eight discs reaches par this way.
  • On a scattered tower, if the largest disc already sits at the bottom of the right-most peg, leave it alone and solve the rest. Otherwise, start by clearing a path for the largest disc that is not yet home.
  • A hint shows the next move that keeps you on a shortest route from your current position. You get three per stage, but each costs 50 points and caps the result at two stars.

Common questions

How do I earn three stars?

Finish in exactly par moves without using a hint. If your extra moves are no more than half of par you get two stars, otherwise one; using any hint limits you to two stars even if you finish on par.

How is the score calculated?

You start from 1,000 and lose 20 for each move over par and 50 for each hint. A completed tower always scores at least 120.

What are scattered towers?

Stages 6, 8 and 11 start with the discs spread across several pegs. The starting layout is always the same, and the par shown (31 moves for stage 6, 54 for stage 8, 14 for stage 11) is the exact shortest solution from that layout.

If I stop halfway, do I have to start over?

No. The tower in progress is saved on this device together with its move history, and it reopens in a paused state so you can keep going.
