Mori's Picnic Boxes guide

Take turns drawing one line between neighbouring dots and claim the boxes you close. Whoever draws the fourth side of a box takes it and moves again at once, so a single careless line can hand over a whole run of boxes. Your opponent is Mori the raccoon, who always answers the same position with the same move.

How to play

  1. Choose a board size on the start screen. Only the 3×3 box board is open at first, and you always move first.
  2. Tap an empty line slot to draw it. On a keyboard, the Arrow keys hop between open slots and Enter or Space draws; on a gamepad use the D-pad and A.
  3. Close a box with its fourth side and it gets your mark, and you move again. If your line closes nothing, the turn passes to Mori.
  4. When every box is taken the game ends and the side with more boxes wins. You score 100 points per box you own, plus 1,000 for a win or 300 for a draw.
  5. Winning 3×3 opens 4×4, and winning 4×4 opens 5×5. The Next button on the result screen takes you straight there.

Strategy tips

  • Never draw the third side of a box that already has two. Mori takes every box it can close.
  • Mori also avoids giving away third sides, so late in the game both of you run out of safe lines. When that happens, hand over the shortest run of boxes.
  • When you are handed a long chain late in the game, take all but the last two boxes, then draw the line at the far end of the chain so a single line closes both. Mori takes those two, then has to open the next chain for you.
  • Mori plays the same move in the same position every time. After a loss, replay the same line and change only the move you regret.

Common questions

When can a game end in a draw?

Only on the 4×4 board, which has an even 16 boxes, at 8 to 8. A draw scores 300, but the next board only opens after a win.

How does Mori decide?

Mori first takes any box it can close. Otherwise it picks a line that creates no third side, and if none is left it draws the line that gives away the fewest boxes. Ties always go to the same slot.

How do I open the 5×5 board?

Boards open one step at a time: win on 3×3 to open 4×4, then win on 4×4 to open 5×5.

Do I lose the game if I close the window?

The board is saved after every line. When you come back it is restored in a paused state, and resuming continues from the same turn.
