Odette's Bridges guide

Work with bridge engineer Odette to place exactly as many bridges as each island's number and join every island into one network. Bridges run only straight across or down, may never cross, and at most two can link the same pair of islands. Four stages of six boards each, 24 in total, grow from a 7×7 board with 9 islands to a 10×10 board with 17, and every board has exactly one solution.

How to play

  1. Tap an island to select it, then tap the nearest island facing it along the same row or column to lay a single bridge.
  2. With an island still selected, tap the same partner again for a double bridge, and once more to remove it. A bridge can never take an island past its number, so if a second bridge would, that tap removes the line instead. The Clear button (X) removes one bridge attached to the selected island.
  3. You cannot place a bridge that would cut across an existing one; trying shows a notice.
  4. The board is solved when every island's number is met exactly and all islands form one connected group.
  5. On a keyboard, move between islands with the arrow keys, select with Enter, and use H for a hint and R to restart. On a gamepad, select with the D-pad and A, clear with B, hint with Y and pause with Start.
  6. Solving one board unlocks the next stage. The Next button continues to the next board in the same stage, and after the sixth board it moves on to the next stage.

Strategy tips

  • When an island's number equals twice its number of neighbours, every neighbour needs a double bridge, as with a 4 that has only two neighbours or a 6 with only three.
  • One less than that is a clue too: a 3 with only two neighbours must have at least one bridge to each of them.
  • Joining two 1-islands to each other, or two 2-islands with a double bridge, cuts that pair off from everything else. Since the whole board must connect, rule those links out from the start.
  • If every number is met but the board is not complete, part of it is cut off. Look for a bridge inside that group that could be redirected to an island outside it.
  • A hint draws a dashed line on any line carrying more bridges than the solution first, then where your board first differs from the unique solution; a red dotted line means that bridge should be removed. Hints are unlimited, but one or two drop you to two stars, three or more to one, and each costs 40 points.

Common questions

Why won't a bridge appear?

A bridge only reaches the nearest island along a line, so tapping a farther one just changes your selection. A line that would cross an existing bridge is blocked until you remove the bridge in the way, and an island that already has its number refuses another bridge with a notice.

When does the next stage unlock?

Solving any single board in a stage unlocks the next stage. Unlocked stages can be picked from the stage list, and the Next button takes you through the remaining boards of the current stage.

How is a board scored?

A solved board is worth 400 plus 30 per island plus a stage bonus (60 for stage 2, 120 for stage 3, 180 for stage 4), minus 40 per hint, and never less than 200.

Can a board have more than one solution?

No. All 24 boards were chosen because they have exactly one solution, and hints always point toward that solution.
